Did you know ...
The Coffea plant belongs to a genus of ten species of flowering plants
of the family Rubiaceae.
It is an evergreen shrub or small tree that grows up to 5 m tall when
unpruned. The leaves are dark green and glossy, usually 10–15 cm long and 6
cm wide. It produces clusters of fragrant, white flowers that bloom
simultaneously. The fruit berry is oval, about 1.5 cm long, and green when
immature, but ripens to yellow, then crimson, becoming black on drying.
Each berry usually contains two seeds, but in 5–10% of the berries, there
is only one; these are called peaberries. Berries ripen in 7–9 months.
The coffee plant is native to subtropical Africa and southern Asia.
There are two main species of coffee that are cultivated today. They
both come from the Rubiaceae family. Coffea arabica, which is also known as
Arabica coffee, makes up 75-80% of the world's production. Coffea
canephora, also known as Robusta coffee, is not as popular because of its
substandard taste. Robusta coffee also contains about 40–50% more caffeine
than arabica. For this reason it is used as an inexpensive substitute for
arabica in many commercial coffee blends. Good quality robustas are used in
some espresso blends to provide a better foam head and to lower the
ingredient cost.
At Voodoo Coffee Co, we make our blends using only highest quality 100%
Arabica beans.

U@MQ goes Fairtrade
In 2008 Macquarie University students and staff participated in a
Fairtrade event on campus. In less than four hours they collected over 862
signatures in favour of Fairtrade products on campus.
Buying Fairtrade Coffee helps ensure farmers earn enough to make a
living and educate their children. We all can take action every day to make
a real difference to people’s lives.
From 2009, the food service outlets at Macquarie University have
adopted our Sacred Grounds Organic and Fairtrade certified coffee!
That makes Macquarie University the first university in Australia to offer
a Fairtrade alternative.
In addition, they will soon expand their Fairtrade range of products to
chocolate, syrups and sugar. They are also looking into being one of the
first in Australia using recycled Takeaway Cups.
Let’s hope other Universities follow their footsteps!
